History of Dog Food

๐ŸŒพ Over 2,000 years ago, Roman philosopher Marcus Terentius Varro wrote the first farming manual, suggesting barley bread soaked in milk and bones for farm dogs.

๐Ÿ‘‘ In the Middle Ages, European Royalty had kennels with cooks preparing huge stews, mostly grains, vegetables, and meat by-products for their hounds.

๐Ÿ  Common household dogs had meager diets, surviving on leftoversโ€”crusts of bread, bare bones, potatoes, cabbage, or whatever they could find.

๐ŸŒฝ In the 18th century, farm dogs were fed mixes of grains and lard. In cities, people made a living by selling meat from dead horses to wealthy dog owners.

๐Ÿ’ฐ The wealthy fed their dogs superior food. In the 1800s, Empress Tzu Hsi of China and European nobility treated their dogs to shark fins, quail breasts, and roast duck.

๐Ÿ”„ In the mid-1800s, the Industrial Revolution led to pets being regarded as luxury items. Result: pet food became more closely scrutinized.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ More pets and money meant a new profession: veterinary medicine, officially founded in the US in 1895. Advice on dog diets influenced the pet food industry for decades.

๐Ÿช In 1860, James Spratt introduced affordable biscuits for urban dog owners, marking the birth of the pet food industry. Spratt’s Dog Cakes were a hit in England and New York, beginning the American Pet Food Industry.

๐Ÿพ Others followed:

  • In the 1880s, a Boston veterinarian introduced A.C. Daniels Medicated Dog Bread.
  • F.H. Bennett Biscuit company (1908) made bone-shaped biscuits and the first puppy food.

๐Ÿ– In 1922, Chappel Brothers introduced Ken-L Ration, the first canned dog food (horse meat). By 1941, canned food had a 90% market share, shifting to dry food during WWII rationing.

๐Ÿ“… In 1950, Ralston Purina used a cooking extruder for Chex cereal and experimented with Purina Dog Chow, becoming the nation’s top dog food.

๐Ÿ“บ In the 1960s, Ken-L Ration transitioned to TV advertising. The Pet Food Institute’s 1964 campaign promoted packaged dog food with $50 million in advertising.

๐Ÿ• In the 1960s and 1970s, dog ownership surged. By 1975, there were over 1,500 dog foods on the market.

๐ŸŒฝ Today, pet food involves 1,600 sq mi of soybeans, 2,100 sq mi of corn, and 1.7M tons of meat and poultry yearly. With over 65 million dogs in the US, the pet food industry is an $11 billion and growing. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’ผ๐Ÿ“ˆ #PetFoodHistory #DoggyDelights #PetFoodIndustry
